Sofia Coppola: Somewhere is Milan

Posted Aug 26, 2009

What is it about hotels and Sofia Coppola? So cool, calm and collected is fashion muse and director Sofia Coppola, that her work appears to be the only revealing part of her. We discover what hotel gets her next directorial treatment.

If you’ve watched Lost In Translation you all be aware of the autobiographical nature of Sofia Coppola’s work. In that wonderful, yet cringe worthy scene in a Tokyo hotel, Sofia showcases life on the road with an successful boyfriend (Spike Jonze) as he works with ditzy Hollywood actresses (rumoured to be Cameron Diaz).

In Sofia’s latest and forth film - Somewhere, she examines another part of her life and another man - her father, famous film director, Francis Ford Coppola.
The film centres on Hollywood’s iconic Chateau Marmont, the hotel of choice of many a tabloid-friendly celebrity and follows bad-boy actor (Stephen Dorff) who gets an unexpected visit from his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning), and is forced to re-examine his life.

Coppola has called it “an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles,” while Focus Features CEO James Schamus describes it as having all the “witty, moving and empathetic qualities that characterize all [of Sofia's] work.”

With Milan empty for the summer it’s rumoured Sofia has already hit the fashion clad streets, enticing local presenter (and Italian X Factor judge) Simona Ventura (above), to join a Hollywood cast that includes a cameo from Benicio Del Toro and Coppola's cousin and brother of Jason, Robert Schwartzman.

"Somewhere" will be shot with Focus Features producing, the same studio that backed the director's immensely popular 2003 film "Lost in Translation” and is set for release in 2010.
