Ron Arad, restless as ever

Opening on Thursday, February 18th at the Barbican Art Gallery is the first major exhibition of Arad's work with no fewer than 120 works; not so much of a tribute as Arad is still very much going at it like it was 1981, when he came up with the infamous Rover chair (former car seat mounted on a steel frame, years before recycling became chic); amongst his many ongoing project is the Design Museum of Holon, Israel (his home country away from his London home), judging from which older dogs can still very much learn new tricks: definitely in keeping with the Arad-ian no-boundaries creativity but quite unlike anything we may have seen before.
From the infamous Rover chair...
... to the Design museum that could host the chair: 30 years well spent and a prime example of design full-circle.
Amongst his enthusiastic admirers are none other than designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, with Dolce & Gabbana one of the sponsors of this new Barbican initiative.
"We have been working with Ron Arad on two exhibitions held at our theatre Metropol [both held during Milan's Design Week in 2006 and 2007 ]and special projects, it’s always been exciting and fun and we had the chance to get closer to Ron as friends, we treasure these experiences and the time spent together. We are admirers of his work that we consider art and collectors of some of his pieces so we are very happy about supporting Ron in his Restless exhibition in London, the city were he has been living and working for many years, and we are looking forward to the next collaboration with him."
Ron's extravaganza opens this Thursday 18th (until May 16th 2010) in London as Fashion Week gets going; surely one can skip a show or two, and for those needing more incentive (aka an opportunity to shop) there is a special gift selection with items handpicked by the man himself. On the Road arrives at Cannes for its Premier
Autumn 2012 sees the release Walter Salles adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s much-treasured novel, ‘On the Road’ (1957), which debuted at Cannes Film Festival.
