Renzo Piano gives Chicago a facelift

Posted May 16, 2009

2009 is clearly the year for Chicago: Obama raised the city’s profile to that of New York and LA, and now the Art Institute of Chicago is set to open its Modern Wing on May 16th.

The project has taken over a decade to complete and is led by Italian architect Renzo Piano, who designed the “flying carpet” steel sun roof as an addition to the city’s ever-changing skyline.

The institute was one of the first exhibitors of modern art back in 1913, causing quite the scandal - The Chicago Tribune described “feelings of disgust and aversion” at the immorality of the artists (which, naturally, brought the public in droves).

The Modern Wing promises to be the place for contemporary art in America, hosting everything from European sculpture to photography to the works of Matisse, Picasso, Dali and any other artist you would ever need to impress your friends at a dinner party.
