Capturing his daughter Alison from infant to woman, her relationships with friends, her rebellion, and underlying it all, her relationship with her father, artist Jack Radcliffe - Alison is a compelling and moving photo documentary.
After the birth of his daughter, Jack took the artist viewpoint to leave behind the isolated subjects of his earlier work, focusing instead on the strength of relationships, using a personal environment to build on his work's strengths.
Photographed in all her extremes - the photographs are senstive and revealing yet never with a judging or censoring eye.
This father-daughter collaboration allows jack to access the private moments of Alison's life, which might, under different circumstances, be off-limits to a parent.
The camera, early in her life, became part of their relationship, necessitating in Jack an acceptance, and calmness.
Radcliffe’s candid portraits of friends, family, acquaintances, carefully composed and richly printed, seem to meet the definition of documentary photography.
Unlike the cold, objective, observational nature often characteristic of this kind of photography, Radcliffe approaches his subjects with an unavoidable compassion and insight.
