Otto Dix comes to North America

Posted Mar 17, 2010

The recognizable works of famous expressionist painter, Otto Dix, will come to be shown as part of his first ever solo museum exhibition in North America. The exhibition features themes of sexuality, war, portraiture, and religion. Swide gets its fix of Otto Dix.

Otto Dix is one of the art world’s most beloved painters, mainly in part for his visual contributions in comprehending the extent of brutality during the Weimar period. Otto Dix once said, “All art is exorcism. I paint dreams and visions too; the dreams and visions of my time. Painting is the effort to produce order; order in yourself. There is much chaos in me, much chaos in our time". While his “dreams and visions” can be deemed as somewhat disturbing, Dix’s unique, grotesque style gives a profound insight into history that no textbook can. The works of Otto Dix can now be seen in North America at Neue Galerie New York

Neu Galerie shares that Otto Dix exhibition addresses four themes: "The first is Dix’s traumatic experiences as a soldier in World War I. The second is portraiture, a genre at which the artist excelled. The third is sexuality, a key theme in the Dix oeuvre. The fourth is religious and allegorical painting".

Der Krieg-Otto Dix

Dix was deeply affected by what he witnessed during his participation in WWI. Experiencing recurring nightmares in which he crawled through destroyed houses. Dix painted his traumatic and unforgettable visions from the war within his portfolio of fifty etchings called Der Krieg.

The Seven Deadly Sins-Otto Dix

Otto Dix painted The Seven Deadly Sins in 1933. It is an allegorical painting that represented Germany's political situation at the time, and was painted immediately after the Nazis had Dix removed from his teaching position at the Dresden Art Academy.

The Dancer Anita Berber-Otto Dix

A must-see painting at Neu Galerie would have to be Dix's captivating red-on-red portrait of dancer Anita Berber, celebrated for her "amorous escapades" and personal strength. Anita lived a relatively difficult life full of drugs, sexual and physical abuse, and yet her spirit continued to shine as with her portrait.

"Otto Dix" is on display at the Neue Galerie from March 11 through August 30. Visit the Neu Galerie website for more info.
