Matthew Barney is back with Ancient Evenings
Ah, for a mind, or at the very least an attention span like artist Matthew Barney. In his new set of works, the artist investigates the ancient Egyptian myth of rebirth in new and disturbing art-forms that are now on display at the Gladstone Gallery in Brussels.
His new show that runs from March 20th - May 9th, injects historical Egyptian philosphies with industrial landscapes - a body becomes a destroyed Chrysler car, ancient hieroglyphic drawings are produced from jelly, lapis dust and oil, and his sculptures are enigmatic vitrines containing books drowned in salt and sand.
Interestingly, Barney grew up with a promising future as a plastic surgeon. A typical popular boy at school, his career path took a sharp left turn when in the 1980's he decided to become an artist instead. After graduating from Yale's art school with an experimental video thesis, he moved to New York where critical acclaim and huge success followed, including in his personal life, when he found a lifelong partner in experimental singer Bjork.
Credited with changing contemporary art for ever - step away from Twitter for a moment and into Barney's warped wonderland.
