Is it time for a menage a trois?

Posted Nov 16, 2009

Cold, dark nights coupled with a recession could herald the perfect time to create, quite literally your own entertainment. For budding writers or film-makers we highlight how an (artful) threesome can literally make your work timeless.

Pop culture loves nothing better than a threesome - not to mention the literary world. Published this year, 'Menage' by author Ewan Morrison is a risqué addition to anyone's Christmas list and documents, "the menages a trois which occurred in the lives of artists, writers and leaders from the 19th century to the present day – from DH Lawrence and George Bernard Shaw to Pablo Picasso and Jack Kerouac." It apears you're nothing without having a had a threesome. Wannabe authors take note...

The film world also loves to experiment with the genre – Perhaps the most famous and stylized film yet has to be Francois Truffaut's 1961 'Jules et Jim' which starred actress Jeanne Moreau and told the story of a love triangle between two friends and an impulsive woman.

2001 indie film 'Y Tu Mama Tambien', featuring Gael Garcia Bernal, Ana Lopez Mercado and Diego Luna put sexy back into road trips following the story of adolescent relationships and love between friends. In the same vein, Bertolucci's 2003 film, 'The Dreamers', starring Eva Green, Michael Pitt and Louis Garrel celebrated the swinging sixties in Paris and some amorous student relationships.

More recently Woody Allen’s 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' saw Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem play a trio of volatile lovers.

D&G's new Time advertising campaign released today.

A luxurious period apartment in Paris is the setting for new D&G's Time advertising campaign that showcases a malicious mademoiselle who abandons herself to provocative games, ending in an upper-class ménage a trois. The risqué situation is interrupted by a toe-curling intrusion, her mother, who naturally doesn't look too impressed by the sofa antics. The fim's soundtrack is by American rock group 'The Sparks' with creativity from Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana under the direction of Cyrill Guyot.

Adapted for film, starring Jeanne Moreau, by Francois Truffaut in 1961, the original novel Jules et Jim was based on Roche's own experiences with a German couple, the Hessels, between the wars.
