Save the robots to save your soul?

Posted Nov 24, 2010

The robotic street artist Pixel Pancho reveals to Swide the reasons why he is obsessed with robots and how he translates this into his art.

Pixel is not only a young urban emerging artist, he has his very own trademark: remodelling deconstructed robots. His passion for robots did not start yesterday and his rational view of the world does explain his anatomical street drawings. Robots on street walls that leave us with the question: “ Are we just machines?”. If you do not have the answer, we have some from Pixel and to be honest we do consider robots differently now that Mr.Pancho has proven their immortality.

1/  Why this attraction to Robots?
PP: I have always loved robots and animated films. Robots are extensions of human bodies and are the reflections of humans trying to be gods by creating them.

2/ How would you qualify your aesthetic journey so far? PP: I'm never satisfied with my work. I always try to push boundaries and go beyond my limits. The most difficult is to translate my thoughts into concrete palpable creations.

3/ Is destruction a form of construction?
PP: Yes, I always create something new from some old stuff, it is a challenge, and I am in competition with myself to build-up my thoughts with the rest of something that I have destroyed.

4/ Do you need to undo to re-do, or can you also add on top of some existing things? PP: Sometimes I add to existing things and at other times I start from scratch.

5/ How do you conceive the human body? PP: To me the Human body is interesting from an anatomic point of view; the way it works is genuinely fascinating and inspires all of my drawings.

6/ If a human is a robot, is the soul inevitably lost?
PP: I have a scientific rational approach rather than a spiritual one. We as humans have created robots to ease our life. Robots do not die; humans’ fear of dying is the reason why we have created religions. Robots are what is left once we are gone.

7/ Why have you called your latest exhibition SAVE THE ROBOTS?
PP: SAVE THE ROBOTS  is an idea Emmanuel (owner of the Parisian art gallery Studio55) and myself had together, SAVE THE ROBOTS to be understood as "save ourselves". To live the present and to be happy are the most important things to me. Let’s try to not be overwhelmed by excessive consumption and production. Life as it is should be the focus. Religions tell us that what comes after “life” is better and deter us from caring about the world around us, which leads to destruction.

8/ Are we all meant to be rescued or can we save ourselves? PP: Nobody will save us. We have to save ourselves.

Swide's 5 Q/A:

1/  Manual or automatic?
PP: Whatever works better.

2/ Straight or curvy? PP: Both of them, depending on which one is more fascinating

3/ Step or jump?
PP: Both

4/ Articulated or fluid?

PP: I prefer fluid.

5/ Key board or touch pad?
PP: Again, whatever works better.
