Helmut Newton: Fired

Posted Aug 19, 2009

There's hope for us all after reading the news that Helmut Newton was once fired from French Vogue. Swide finds out why and takes a peek at the unseen images.

As told by June Newton on Helmut's foundation site -

In 1964 Helmut Newton was commissioned by Queen magazine to photograph the revolutionary collection by Courrèges. The fashion editor, Claire Rendlesham, decided on a journalistic scoop showing only Newton's Courrèges photos and excluding all other fashion houses from her Paris report.

When Queen landed on the desk of Françoise de Langlade (the then associate editor-in-chief of French Vogue) she hit the roof. Newton was called into her office, a tremendous row ensued and he was accused of treachery and disloyalty. Newton pointed out to her that he didn't have an exclusive contract with Vogue, but he was still was kicked out of the hallowed halls of Vogue only to return in 1969 when Francine Crescent was then appointed Editor-in-Chief.

Newton went on to be a regular contributor until 1983.
