Greg Lauren's Alteration

Posted Sep 29, 2009

As the nerve-shattering anxiety of a recession-clouded New York Fashion Week calmed down (for the record, fashion survived just fine), the Downtown fall social season kicked in with another victim of the great vicious spiral, art.

At the opening reception for artist and actor Greg Lauren's new collection Alteration, attendees were presented with a battery of faux-decaying and seemingly papier-mache-constructed "garments" (including even a rather hefty pair of overalls)--which just may have been an incisive statement on the fragility of our fashion hopes and dreams.

One was reminded, surely, to not be too taken with le grande illusion of fashion but to see it for the epherma that it really is. Gerard Butler and Elizabeth Berkley were amongst the famous faces flitting about the gallery; but it was Parker Posey, hardly surprisingly, who provided the evening's highlight, as she attempted to stuff her bemused poodle Gracie into an entirely too small handbag, before finally giving up on the hopeless but charmingly amusing endeavor. We didn't get Gracie's take on the art, unfortunately.
