Friend or faux?

Posted May 8, 2009

It's time to sharpen your friendship radar as author and NYC-girl-about-town Heather Wagner’s new book Friend or Faux gives us the real insight into social circles.

When Adam Ant sneered that, “I want those who get to know me / To become my admirers or my enemies” in the lyrics to “Friend Or Foe”, he was pretty sure who were the enemies (conservative crusties) and who the admirers (cute punkie girls in Vivienne Westwood pirate gear). In author and NYC-girl-about-town Heather Wagner’s new book Friend or Faux (Quirk Books), it’s significantly more complex.

In fact, when Heather and hubby / ReadyMade editor Andrew gathered some groovy media friends (Or WERE they?) for a St. Germain-sponsored launch party in their (postmodernly) stylish Tribeca loft, it was impossible not to wonder who in the room might have specifically inspired some of the nefarious and / or unsettling character types in the book.

In it, Ms. Wagner hilariously details the various female archetypes of social doom, from the Design-y Friend to the Magic Sparkle Pegasus Powder Friend to, naturally, the Undercover Slut Friend. The razor-witted descriptions will not only fuel sundry LOL Sunday brunch conversations, but also significantly sharpen your friendship radar, and hopefully prevent you from ever, ever having a moment of thinking to yourself, “How the hell did I let Felicity-Moon drag me backpacking to #$!&%! Nepal????” Godspeed.
