Everyone loves a surprise

Posted Feb 22, 2010

The eyebrow-raising combination of lingerie, stilettos, and semi-nude Austrian men set the stage for New York's latest interactive art exhibition, "Blind Sculpture". The exhibition doesn't feature any finished work, but rather invites visitors to partake in the creative process.

The four-man Austrian art collective, Gelitin, have been working together (while blindfolded) on an extensive sculpture to be unveiled at the Greene Naftali Gallery through February 27th. Guests are invited to witness the creative process, and at the same time are being entertained by the many happenings: from cross-dressing men prancing around in stilettos to blindfolded artists on ladders wielding power drills in creating their sculpture. Whether you watch in suspense, hoping no one gets rushed to the hospital or laughing at the man who decided that it may have been too hot to keep his pants on, the exhibition aims to please.

The gallery has been set up like a theatre with chairs and platform seating. And with any proper theatre, musical performances can be expected. Gelitin have enlisted the help of a pianist to set the tone of the witty installation. The exhibition truly is an 'organized mess' with its visitation schedule, but no real awareness as to what's going to happen. A sense of suspense being the very reason why the gallery has been seeing an influx of guests as the days get closer to the unveiling. Also, not knowing which famous artists will be coming to lend a helping hand have attracted visitors to "Blind Sculpture".David LaChapelle, Rita Ackermann, Spencer Sweeney,Adam McEwan, Tom Sachs have all made appearances to the Greene Naftali Gallery.

The  Greene Naftali Gallery has been transformed into a contruction site taking center stage.

"Blind Sculpture" is going into its last week, ending on February 27th. We encourage everyone to visit the exhibition and witness the unveiling of the fun-filled ten day art process.
