District 9: Select your species

Posted Jul 27, 2009

Forthcoming science fiction film produced by Peter Jackson tells the story of alien refugees landing in South Africa. Coupled with the success of White Wedding, is it time for the county's cinema to take its place in the sun?

The forthcoming's title is influenced by District Six in Cape Town, although is actualyl set in Jo'Burg. The film tells the story of alien refugees, the last survivors of their home world who arrive on earth to set up in a makeshift home in South Africa's District 9 as the world's nations argued over what to do with them.

Patience over the alien situation eventually runs out and their control is contracted to Multi-National United (MNU), a private company uninterested in the aliens' welfare who stand to receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens' advanced weaponry work.

And it's not just District 9 that is hitting cinemas with a South African spin. Recent South Africa film, White Wedding, is a feel-good movie about love, commitment, intimacy and friendship and the host of maddening obstacles that can get in the way of a happy ending which managed to unite the country at the box-office.

The comedy grossed over R1.1-million on its opening weekend in South African movie circuit.  See the film's trailer here www.whiteweddingmovie.co.za.
