Cutting edge cuckoo clocks

Posted Apr 1, 2009

According to German Newspaper, Spiegel when Karl Lagerfeld sat Strumbel's clocks he reportedly exclaimed, "A new expression of German culture, how stimulating." Swide discovers more.

German artist Stefan Strumbel's art stems from the graffiti and street art scene. He uses spray cans and silk screen printing which gives his work a cutting edge meets pop art feel.

His signature pieces are cuckoo clocks in outlandish colours, adorned with the weird and the wonderful alongside  traditional German images such as deer antlers.

According to newspaper Spiegel when "fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld was photographed in front of a lurid cuckoo clock in German magazine Stern on the occasion of his 75th birthday, many readers were baffled. But for the young German artist Stefan Strumbel, it was the "ultimate accolade" to have his art selected by the influential pony-tailed doyen of German fashion" (read more from the article here www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/).

Stefan's work centres around the concept of  “Heimat,” of “homeland". Although his work includes cultural artifacts such as cuckoo clocks or the traditional costume of the Black Forest he isolates and recontextualises using everyday objects such as tree-shaped air fresheners and shopping carts and giving pieces of his work titles such as “What the fuck is Heimat?

One to watch? We think so.
