A fallen princess

Posted Dec 2, 2009

With Christmas coming and Princesses seemingly everywhere - call us scrooge but the happy ever after line isn't really working for us. Photographer Dina Goldstein and her Fallen Princesses series made us smile in a way a faux-tiara just can't.

Canadian photographer Dina Goldstein - like many of us, grew up with fairytales ringing in her ears. Exploring the darker side of fairytales in the Brother Grimm's fables however, Dina began to imagine a non-Disney scenario where fairy princesses were juxtaposed with the issues affecting women such as illness, addiction and self-image issues.

What she came up with was a series entitled Fallen Princesses that showcases a jilted Cinderella in a dive bar in Vancouver, Snow White in a domestic nightmare surrounded by children with an unemployed prince, or an overweight Red Riding Hood making her way to her granny's with fast-food in her shopping trolley.
