At the heart of Germany with Berlin and Hamburg, Munich has a lot to offer. Museums, monuments, shops, restaurants and clubs: Swide picks the spots not to miss.
Munich: a pocket-guide by Swide
Munich is situated in the Southern part of Germany and it is the capital of Bavaria, located along the Isar river. It is the third biggest city in Germany with around one million inhabitants, following Berlin and Hamburg.
The city has a lot to offer all year round, but Spring and Summer allow tourists to walk around the city more leisurely as snowfalls from October till April are very frequent.
Maxvorstad Arc, Munich
Munich is packed with interesting things to see and visit. The university area is definitely something you have to see: both neighborhoods, just west of the Englischer Garten, are trendy and charming at the same time, with their small coffee houses, bookstores and restaurants.
Last Supper restaurant, Munich
The city center is interesting as well: Karlsplatz is the core of the area (but locals call it Stachus) and it contains the historical walls of the city. In Marienplatz – dedicated to the Madonna – you can find the City Hall, in Odeonsplatz admire the monument dedicated to Ludwig I and the dome of the Theatinerkirche (the San Gaetano Church), and the Isartor Old Gate, the historical entrance to the city. Visit the Stadtmuseum, which retraces the historical steps of the city from royal residency to modern city.
“Walking Man” in Schwabing, Munich
Art lovers cannot miss the Kunstareal neighborhood in the city center. It features three “Pinakotheken” galleries (Alte Pinakothek, Neue Pinakothek and Pinakothek der Moderne), the Glyptothek, the Staatliche Antikensammlung, both specialised in classical Greek and Roman art), the Museum Brandhorst, a private collection of modern art and many other galleries.
After all the meandering you have still energy to party? Head to the Haidhausen district which has more than 30 clubs to offer, together with bars and restaurants.
And if you are there this weekend, you’ll know Champions League Final will take place on Saturday 19th of May: Chelsea FC and Bayern Munich will compete for the trophy at the Munich Stadium, kick off at 8.45 pm and the city will be one great big party atmosphere!
