This is French cuisine with a bittersweet aftertaste: Chanterelle, a NYC restaurant at the top of its game for no less than 30 years has recently experienced a sad closure; in celebration of three decades of happy diners it is auctioning some its famous menu covers designed by leading contemporary artists. Art never tasted so refined.
The New York legend who put art on the menu
The chanterelle is a delicate but highly fragrant mushroom and that was just what its eponymous’ restaurant cuisine was about. After years of gorgeous French cuisine during which it became a New York legend, life got in the way of this fairytale forcing the happy couple who successfully ran it for years to move on to pastures new. For an ending in style however, the owners decided to auction off their artful menu covers designed by friends and art legends. Amongst them is a variety of names from Marcel Marceau to Matthew Barney.
