Sonam was born in one of the most well-known and powerful families who rest on the Olympus of the Indian film industry, Bollywood. Her parents, Anil and her father is the world famous director, her grandfather Surinder was a corner stone of Indian filmmaking. Her uncles are producers while her first cousin is Ajun Kapoor, Indian heartthrob. 

Notwithstanding her pedigree Sonam was not initially intending to go into acting, but since she has made 9 films and counting. Her latest movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, a biopic of Milkha Singh’s troubled life between Partition and athletics is due for release next summer.
