Just when we thought we'd seen the best goal scored from an overhead kick when Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored against England, AC Milan defender Philippe Mexes lands an absurdly good goal from a similar position.
They say lightning never strikes twice, and the odds of witnessing two such wonderful goals, scored from way, way out with overhead kicks must be impossible to calculate. Much as Ibrahimovic's virtuosity grabbed the world's headlines when he scored four for Sweden against England in a friendly last week, his brilliance is something we have all become accustomed to.
Perhaps Mexes' effort is even more impressive as it came from the foot of a defender. It was the second goal for Milan against Anderlecht in a game they had to win at all costs to keep their interest in the competition. A first half strike by wunderkind El Sharaawy put Milan in front before Mexes took a ball on the chest from a set piece on the edge of the area and connected with a sweet overhead kick. You decide if it's better than Zlatan's or not, but we think it deserves its place in the top 5 bicycle kick goals of all time.
Philippe Mexes, AC Milan v Anderlecht
Zlatan Ibrahimavic, Sweden v England
Hugo Sanchez, Real Madrid v Atletico Bilbao
