The Hollywood hunk turns hitman-for-hire in his latest silver screen outing, Killer Joe, which is directed by legendary William Friedkin and is causing some excitement amongst the critics.
Matthew McConaughey is Killer Joe
William Friedkin caused mass excitement on the movie scene 40 years ago with the cult hit ‘The French Connection’, which starred Gene Hackman as drink-fuelled cop Jimmy Doyle, and is about to do it again. Critics are hailing this as a film that sees the talents of Friedkin appear fresh and on form, which has also been noted in the abilities of the actors portraying the characters that reside within the on-screen action of ‘Killer Joe’.
‘Killer Joe’ is an adaptation of Tracey Lett’s play of the same name, which has proved popular across the world, having been translated into 12 languages. The incarnation being dealt by Friedkin has also roped in a couple of well-known, respected faces from tinsel town. You can mark Emile Hirsch, Thomas Haden Church, Juno Temple and Matthew McConaughey off your wish list as they are all accounted for and the critics are as equally excited about the direction as they are the acting skills of these actors.
The film sparks into life when Emile Hirsch’s character, Chris, hires bent cop Matthew McConaughey to bump-off his mother Adele and, as a request of failed prepayment, McConaughey asks for sexual access to Chris’s virginal step sister as a ‘retainer’.
Don’t expect the same twisted scenes that can be found in Friedkin’s ‘The Exorcist’, no, instead you can expect to see something that keeps your senses alert throughout. Critics have described this film as having a keen eye on apocalyptic urban wreckage seeping through a loose framework that has comparison to a fairytale. The want of a rescuer and the entrapment being kept a high by the ugly relatives, but this is far from a Disney flick.
Matthew McConaughey adopts the character of Killer Joe Cooper, who is a cop by day and a hitman-for-hire by night and has been hailed as the role that will change his career. The review he received at the Venice Film Festival called commented on his performance as underplayed with, ‘with seductive, snake-like charm as the black-clad Joe, by far the most sophisticated, intelligent and capable individual on view.’, a tad different from the other roles that we have seen this hunk adopt over the years.
So, if you are a film thrill seeker, like me, then I reckon that ‘Killer Joe’ is the film for you. And if you’re the kind of viewer that has to watch intense action through your fingers then I think the charms of Matthew McConaughey are a justified reason to get yourself down to the cinema.
‘Killer Joe’ will be hitting the cinemas soon but for now check out Matthew McConaughey on Swide to wet your appetite.
