Born in Chiswick (England) from a Russian father and English mother, her career started in her twenties when she got her first leading role as Cleopatra in the Shakespeare tragedy ‘Anthony and Cleopatra’ in London, 1965, and never looked back.

Equally adept on stage as in the movies – she has an eclectic portfolio including extensive television work television work, and on both sides of the Atlantic – interpreting roles such as Lady Macbeth, Nina in Chekhov’s ‘The Seagull’, interpreting comedies and tragedies. Robert Altman directed her in ‘Gosford Park’, for which she received an Academy Award-nomination for best supporting actress in 2002. She won the Academy Award for best female actor for ‘The Queen’ (2006). In 2010 she starred in ‘The Debt’.

Her next performance will be a challenging one. She will play Alma Reville, Alfred Hitchcock's wife, in a biopic soon to be released (2013), Hitchcock (previous title option: "Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho"), by director Sacha Gervasi.

Hitchcock will be played by Anthony Hopkins and the cast will include Scarlett Johansson (Janet Leigh), James D'Arcy (Anthony Perkins). The screenplay is by John McLaughlin, co-author of ‘The Black Swan’. There are all the right ingredients for it to be a critical and commercial success.
