Garrett Hedlund: Playing with fire and the Cohen Brothers

Suited and booted during the Cannes Film Festival at the Stella Artois Cannes Cinema Club, Garrett Hedlund looked every part the leading man. With his role in ‘On the Road’ pushing him into the big leagues it wasn’t going to be long before the rumours started to fly…

This handsome chap has been making us swoon since his big screen debut, playing the part of Patroclus alongside Brad Pitt in ‘Troy’ (2004). Then, in 2010 he replaced the ‘y’ in ‘Troy’ with a ‘n’ and played the leading role in Disney’s remake of ‘Tron’, having him placed under scrutiny as he reinterpreted the role of Sam Flynn. It was no surprise that this starring role did the job and, now, he is practically batting away the offers and auditions that are coming his way. One that he didn’t turn down was the on-screen interpretation of Jack Kerouac’s novel, ‘On the Road’, placing him alongside Kirsten Dunst, Viggo Mortensen, Sam Riley and Kristen Stewart.

Now that his name is becoming household, the rumours have started to fly and, this week, it is about his future roles. Pitted against Armie Hammer, Hedlund has been reported as a lead contender to be cast as Finnick Odair in the second instalment of the ‘Hunger Games’ trilogy, ‘Catching Fire’. No more news has been leaked on this hot topic since the weekend and so we are all left wondering what is going to happen, in the Swide office.

What we do know is that 2013 will see him star in the new film by the Cohen Brothers, famed for ‘The Big Lebowski’ (1998), ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ (2000) and ‘No Country for Old Men’ (2007). His character in ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ is yet to named but we know that the film, set during New York’s Folk music scene in the 1960s, requires the cast to have at least a little musical background. This should be no problem for Garrett as he starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow in ‘Country Strong’ (2010).

With no trailers of his new films to cast our eyes over, we have been getting our fill of the American man via the joys of ‘On the Road’,  where you can see him star alongside Kirsten Dunst, Sam Riley and Kristen Stewart.
