There are moments that make the history worth remembering as these 5 minutes 40 seconds back in 2003 Video Music Awards. It’s Britney Spears who appears on stage at the top of a huge wedding cake.

It’s a fact: history does repeat itself. The pointy slingbacks make an uncomfortable comeback like unwanted erotic messages from your stalking ex as you sleep peacefully with your boyfriend. Some group of drugged hair stylists decides perms are not only for the sheep but also for the lonely and bored housewives as well so voila’, suddenly it’s 80s all over again.
Yet there are moments that do not repeat itself (unless you log onto youtube and watch the same thing on repeat), moments that make the history worth remembering as these 5 minutes 40 seconds back in 2003 Video Music Awards. It’s Britney Spears who appears on stage at the top of a huge wedding cake, imitating Madonna’s ‘Like A Virgin’ performance. Then arrives Christina Aguilera in the same wedding dress. A few seconds after they finish their parts, get applauded by Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and the others in the audience, the music stops.
Madonna, the queen of Pop, emerges from the giant cake. The history is made: the rest is dirty dancing, lesbian kisses, hot trio dance routine, Missy Elliott that joins the fans and the whole music industry that applauds the performance, rising to their feet.

This was back in 2003, I was studying at the university in Turkey so I remember staying up very late, (risking not being able to wake up for my exam the next day) to fight the time difference and watch the show live. I had drunk so many coffees that day to keep myself awake that my skin turned brown and my friends asked me where I got my tan.
But this was not the first time. If I have dark circles and bags under my eyes or suffer from chronic insomnia, it’s all because of Britney Spears and her history-changing performances late at nights. She is the pop star who changed the way I saw pop music.

The roads were two: you would either keep your wardrobe expenses at minimum, wear black over and over again and take a one ticket ride to deafness at an early age with Metallica cds or lose yourself in the pop of 90s and idolize Britney Spears enough to sympathize with cobra snakes just because she wore one around her shoulders, singing ‘I’m a slave for you’ in VMA 2001.

It’s not true that pop music is superficial. I can guarantee that Britney
Spears’ music videos are the reason why I became a creative individual in the
end. Who else could have got me fantasize about the lockers we had in our high
school if not her? The first time I saw empty corridors, I had my heart go boom
boom pow, expecting sexy classmates with pony tails, rushing up in the corridor,
dancing towards me in a sexy routine. Too bad it was a bunch of fatties, banging
up the lockers’ doors as they were stocking up some greasy cheeseburger to eat
later on. In these moments of delusion, I would sing ‘hit me baby one more time,
oh baby baby’ and cheer myself up.
I remember telling my friends that I loved Britney so much that I saw Justin
Timberlake as my brother in law and if they had a baby one day, I would be
offended if they wouldn’t invite me to the baptism. Talk about obsession, shall
we? What happened then?

She chose the wrong guy, aka Kevin Federline. She got into binge eating, she shaved her hair in public, she attacked the paparazzi (my fave moment) with an umbrella, she just stood there as I was chanting in front of the tv: gimme more, gimme gimme more… She fell down on the way, we all do. We had our expectations too high that she felt exhausted in the end. I am not happy writing this part, I’ll just skip.

So erase and rewind. Harper’s Bazaar. The new issue. ‘It’s Britney, bitch.’ She wore a lot of Dolce&Gabbana outfits in the past: she was covered in see-through lace, sexy animalier satin, and beige ribbons.

Yet this time, it’s a dress from the upcoming fw 12 collection: a black, chiffon dress with a lot of star prints on it. Seeing this picture, I get goosebumps down my spine. Britney is back, and she’s here to stay. So get your ipods up and running, this girl’s gonna take us on an adventure. And we’ll say altogether: oppps, she did it again.
She
likes that!
