When someone celebrates their birthday it usually all ‘me, me, me’, Alicia Keys, on the other hand, has taken the run-up to her 31st birthday in a more humble manner and as an opportunity to honour others.
Lending her voice to Steven Spielberg, Alicia was on hand to honour the cinematic hero as he picked up two awards, one for the animated film kudo for ‘The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn” and the other was the David O. Selznick Achievement Award. Told you she wasn’t playing by the birthday rulebook. But we know that she won’t let this year pass without a party…
The soul star is going to be celebrating her birthday tomorrow, the 25th January, and it looks like she is already gearing up to make it a good one. First of all, she belted out two of her most famous hits at the 23rd Producer’s Guild Awards and has also been recognised as quite the producer herself this month, giving her fine reason to raise a glass of two.
Yes, the award-winning songstress is the proud producer of recently opened Broadway play Stick Fly, which Alicia describes as “…a story that everybody can relate to. I'm passionate about this play because it is so beautifully written and portrays Black America in a way that we don't often get to see in entertainment. I know it will touch audiences who will find a piece of themselves somewhere inside this house.”

Since it’s debut night, ‘Stick Fly’ has been getting tongues wagging, not only for the talents of producer – Alicia Keys, director – Kenny Leon and Playwright – Lydia R. Diamond but also critics have been raving about the performance of unheralded actress Condola Rashed, who plays the part of Cheryl. Alicia has been on hand to ensure that the actress is getting as much recognition as possible, and evening gushing about her to fans.
Other news to be coming from camp Keys is that she’s put pen to paper (or fingers to piano in her case) and is in the process of putting a new record together. More details of this are yet to be confirmed but, considering what Alicia has brought to the table before, we know that she won’t disappoint. She enjoyed phenomenal success with ‘Empire State of Mind’, her duet with Jay-Z, and so it would be safe to say that there is a lot of expectation from her fans for the next record.
So, what of her birthday? Well, in September 2011 she surprised her producer husband to a party at the High Lane roller skating rink in New York City. To say thanks, he allegedly bought her a one-of-a-kind Lotus sports car… umm… so; does she still get a present? Or was that classed as an early birthday gift? Either way… the Swide team wish her a very happy birthday and have no doubt that she’ll celebrate it in style.
