Sofia Coppola has reunited with Focus Features - the studio behind Lost in Translation - for her project, Somewhere, to be released later this year.
The news that Sofia Coppola was working on a movie called Somewhere last year created a great excitement in the industry. With only 3 movies, she has managed to gain a real recognition as a film director. The film is meant to be released later this year and should be presented at the Venice Film Festival rather than at Cannes. Sofia’s work reveals a strong and complex personality. Somewhere is no exception and might be the one where she unveils the most. It is “an intimate story set in contemporary Los Angeles”, it will be filmed in LA’s famous hotel Chateau Marmont and will star Stephen Dorff (Public Enemies), who will play an excess-loving actor who is forced to reconsider his lifestyle when 11-year-old daughter Elle Fanning (Phoebe in Wonderland) arrives without warning.
If things remain within the Coppola family, some familiar faces such as musician Thomas Mars of Phoenix (for the soundtrack) to Sofia’s cousin Robert Schwartzman will take part in Somewhere. Francis Coppola’s daughter has been quite secretive about her upcoming project even though some of the contributors have already expressed their enthusiasm. A few months ago Dorff told buddy Owen for Interview Magazine “I really think it’s probably the best part I’ve ever been given. I’ve known Sofia for a long time. [...] I’m really lucky to have the opportunity to work with Sofia. Somewhere takes place in the Chateau Marmont—I’m going to be moving in there soon. I’ll actually be living there as we shoot, which is kind of cool. My character is going through some kind of personal crisis. He’s an actor, yeah, who’s got a kid. And there have been a lot of changes in his life. It’s really in Sofia’s style. It’s very poetic, sweet and unique. It’s not the kind of scripts we get sent very often."
No trailer or preview is available as yet; however let us hope for a last minute scheduled premiere in Cannes… Who would better rock the red carpet than our beloved pregnant Sofia Coppola?
