Back with another 5 for you to get your ears around, Swide’s Ben Taylor has picked some of the sounds that have been exciting him the last couple of weeks. From Ireland to Phoenix, the artists range form solemn electronica to afrobeat flecked pop tunes. Enjoy.
Villagers – The Waves
Villagers, an Irish Band fronted by Conor J. O’Brien, released their first EP, Hollow Kind, in 2009, getting the group compared to the likes of Sparklehorse and Bright Eyes. They are back with a new single ‘The Waves’ and sees them experiment furthermore with electronic elements and layering within their sound. ‘The Waves’ touches upon the idea of the apocalypse, new beginnings and acceptance, set to a background of warm percussion and synths., which builds to a thunderous climax. Great stuff.

Dead Times – Slow Burning Bliss
Now, this was an unexpected treat. I was looking through my Soundcloud and saw that Dead Times have just released a glorious piece of slow burning electronica, that’s perfect for late night relaxing. In some ways it sounds like light rain fall turning into a storm… you’ll see what I mean. Dead Times are two guys from Phoenix, who have been making decent tunes and have just released a collection of 9 tracks on Bandcamp. Little else is know about them but, what I do know is that, they deserve your time. Intelligent, deep, vocal electronica
Seye – Mexicana Bounce
Now for something different. Seye (pronounced Shey-ah) is the younger brother of Metronomy’s multi-talented Olugbenga Adelekan and, slowly, he has been working on fusions of afrobeat with popular music styles, aiming to do what the likes of Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel did, back in the day. Think Vampire Weekend with a huge injection of pop dance and you’re halfway there to what Mexicana Bounce has got instore for you. Enjoy.

MS MR
The new video of New York based MS MR came to my attention today and, i’m not going to lie to you, I’ve not been able to stop listening to it or the previous single, Hurricane. This is captivating stuff and, for those who love Florence + the Machine, you are going to love this. Bones is taken from their EP Candy Bar Creep Show is out now and available through Tumblr (http://msmrmusic.tumblr.com/) and I highly suggest that you invest in them. These guys are on to something good and you should get involved, too. Mixing retro production with today’s tendency to layer percussion against synth, MS MR will take you to a place that is something rather heavenly. Enjoy.

Deptford Goth
Hailing from London, Deptford Goth seems to able to weave in and out of all genres, bringing synth pop, soul, dubstep and string instrumentation together perfectly. The overall effect is fleshy, full pop gems that are accessible to every ear yet feel deeply personal. ‘Life After Defo’ deals with the theme of life after love or something that comes to an end and the reality that there is more out there. Although it doesn’t make you feel particularly hopeful, there is a sense of warmth in the lyrics of Deptford Goth and will strike a chord with whoever listens to it.
