November and December are usually accompanied with a mix of emotions; weather induced moodswings, the longing for the distant Spring and the anticipation of Christmas. Well, while you wait, here are 5 new sounds.
Steed Lord – Secret Love
Icelandic performance art project Steed Lord have been been playing with the ideals of pure creativity, working experimental photography, fashion design and film into their music and celebrated live shows. The all Icelandic trio, comprised of Kali, Mega and Eddie, are, what you could call, emotional synthpop heroes, who relocated to Los Angeles to push their vision along with their label New Crack City Records. It’s been all worth it as they have toured the world over, been remixed by some of the most renown DJs and built a faithful following. Earlier this month saw the release of their new track ‘Secret Love’, the perfect mix of early house music, euphoric 80s synth and pop, which all comes to a wonderful break at 3:23. Listen and enjoy.

Flume – Holdin On
Last month we bought you the experimental RnB of Dead Times and now we have the new work from Sydney’s Flume. The moniker of Harley Streten has been gaining popularity over the last year or so, DJing, remixing and producing his music, which he has branded as ‘Flume Step’. I like his confidence. November 9th saw the release of his new album, which went head to head with One Direction for the number one spot… insane. His brand of ‘Flume Step’ is incredible and here is one of the best cuts from the album, ‘Holdin On’.

Foals – Inhaler
Woof… they are back! Foals’ hotly anticipated follow up to 2010’s ‘Total Life Forever’ is set for release in early February 2013 and is entitled ‘Holy Fire’. The single ‘Inhaler’ serves as the lead single, coming is a welcome punch in the face amidst a music scene that is currently over run by processed beats and electronic happenings. Picking up where ‘Total Life Forever’ left off, ‘Inhaler’ here’s a distinct change in lead singer Yannis Philippakis’ use of vocals, opting for something that is more of a roar than the melodic rise and fall we’re familiar with. Kicking off with the lyrics ‘Sticks and stones don’t break my bones, you make believe
It’s lock and load, it’s a dead end road to you and me’, you immediately understand that Philippakis is taking no prisoners in his desire for some breathing space. Bring it on.

Cosmic Kids – Freight to my Soul
Now for something a little more soothing; Cosmic Kids’ recent release ‘Freight To My Soul’ is a perfectly chilled out piece of emotional electronica, compelling those that listen to it to reminisce about good times past. Ron Poznansky and Daniel Terndrup met at high school where they both attended the class that kids who have trouble paying attention are sent. Eventually, they applied their overactive minds to making music and, fast forward a few years, they’ve gone to remix acts such as The Rapture, Poolside and Holy Ghost! Well, their track ‘Freight To My Soul’ finally got its video release (directed by Evan Stalker) and it fits the glittering synths of the track perfectly, taking us on a journey through what appears to be a retro-futuristic cityscape, soaring off towards an unknown cosmos. Cosmic Kids’ haven’t released any news about the future but we, at Swide, are hoping for of their own material soon. Love it.

Avec Sans – The Answer
London’s Alice Fox and Jack St. James are the guys behind Avec Sans, an electro indie outfit that have been carving out a neat little fanbase amongst the music critics, being hailed as, ‘The new dynamic electro duo to beat’, by Paul Lester of Amazing Radio/The Guardian… and they are not wrong. When their blasted out electronic and unapologetic cover of Bon Iver’s ‘Perth’ emerged online earlier this year, music bloggers were desperate for answers as to who they were. Since then, they’ve not disappointed us, releasing ‘Heartbreak Hi’ and, now, ‘The Answer’. Their new track acts as a dark war cry for those of us going through hard times with someone who perhaps expects too much of them. The chorus is sure to become something of a mantra for their fans and one that will be shouted out with conviction at their gigs. Avec Sans are most definitely ones to watch, injecting the music scene with no nonsense approach to the popular sound doing the rounds in the charts at the moment. Exciting times.
