Alpines have finally been getting the recognition that they deserve. The UK based duo have been making sounds together since 2010, has had their track ‘Drive’ used by Rankin in a fashion video and they’ve been on the road with some amazing talent. October sees the release of their early hours EP. Here's a closer look at the latest release Got Me Wrong.
The video is the second collaboration that Alpines have done with Vicky Lawton, the creative director of Hunger Magazine, and it is beyond slick. Bob Matthews and Catherine Pockson are on to something very good and the latest song to come from their dark-pop outfit, Alpines, has been turning heads in the music world. The track is lifted from their highly anticipated 2012 EP Early Hours, which includes Chances, Hidden Love and Deeper. Their sound is diverse and intelligent, weaving in and out of electronic genres and holding it all together with a backbone that could be likened to that of Florence and the Machine… who they actually supported at Alexandra Palace. They’ve also offered support to Swide favourites The Naked and Famous and also the soulful Emeli Sande.
The sound of You Got Me Wrong draws you into a sense of desperation that is felt when someone hasn’t understood your intentions and taken them for something other than good. It also showcases the power of Catherine’s vocals, which are comparable to those of current electro soul crooner Jessie Ware and stretching to the epic heights of Zola Jesus. Bob and Catherine work solidly together in their vision, having shared their combined thoughts and experiences on a self-penned blog that incorporated a mix of patterns, sounds and colour influences that represented future Alpine designs.
The dark-pop of Alpines is starting to sound more rounded than ever and the Early Hours EP feels like a teaser for better things to come. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long for more as they are currently in the studio adding the finishing touches to their untitled debut album, expected early 2013. Before all of this though, the EP, Early Hours, was released on 8th October and is supported by a launch tonight 11th at The Lexington, London.
