Mood Swings has hitched a ride to the U.S. and taking time out with those that are making nice noises in there and in Canada. Well, everyone needs a holiday, even if it’s only musically.
New York’s electronic music scene has been spewing out some of the freshest talents in the world. At the start of the millennium Fischerspooner released their debut album and immediately topped worldwide charts, not staying confined to the underground or clubbing scene but managing to impose themselves on a wider audience with their yet unheard mix of new wave, synthpop and dance.
The following year the label DFA Records was co-founded by producer James Murphy, who published his first album with the band LCD Soundsystem a few months later. Apart from the success of LCD Soundsystem, DFA then went on to publish the likes of Hot Chip, YACHT, Shitrobot, Holy Ghost! and more, greatly contributing to the alternative electronic music scene worldwide.
YACHT rapidly became one of the favourite bands of both indie rock and electro enthusiasts thanks to club-friendly and catchy singles with an irreverent and ironic approach.

DFA Records is responsible for the launch of another great ensemble: Hercules and Love Affair. The band is the brainchild of Andy Butler, a DJ and producer from New York, and since its debut in 2008 with the single “Blind” it has gathered a growing number of followers. Their first album was mostly disco-oriented, anticipating a future trend – the club scene was still awash with nu-rave and heavy electro sounds, while their second album went more in an early-90s house direction, as the club scene was still fully immersed in the disco revival that they themselves had helped initiate. Their capacity of anticipating and creating trends has always kept them on top and has helped launch the careers of its member Kim-Ann Foxman and its guest vocalist Nomi Ruiz (as a part of the trio Jessica 6).

It is to be noted that the rest of North America hasn’t been idle either. Canada has given us one of the freshest talents around lately: Azari & III. The group’s first single “Hungry for the power” came out in 2009 and has since been played in most clubs worldwide. Their first studio album followed in 2011 and they have since been playing acclaimed gigs non-stop, while keeping up some amazing remixing work of which this remix of Sam Sparro’s latest single is a great example.
