Bjork is back and those who were expecting another commercially charged attempt like the last LP had better listen up because she has drawn influences from nature, music and technology to bring you a concept that pushes her further than before.
Bjork: ‘Crystalline’ video reunites her with Michel Gondry
By lacing and interlinking these influences together Bjork brings you Biophilia, an album that explores different natural phenomena through musical structures. This project and the Biophilia world can be accessed further by the listener through the use of an iPad package that has an app for each song that varies in style and use. For example, for track ‘Virus’ the app features a study of cells being attacked by a virus and the iPad user is asked to attempt to halt the destruction of these cells. What is different here though is that success stops the song from playing and the user actually needs to let the virus run its course in order to hear the track in full. Legendary British broadcaster and naturalist David Attenborough introduces the world that Biophilia creates in the video below:
The sound of the album juxtaposes many layers, whether it is Bjork’s voice, the vocals of a female choir, the bleeps or glicks that can be found within the backbone of the LP etc etc. This sees a return to her ability to jump genres with a thread of consciousness that, when you consider her back catalogue, is notable on hearing her new work. This LP sees her push the boundaries and making would-be external components vital to the whole project, using current interaction personal technologies part of the experience rather than just as a means of fan interaction.
Her live shows are set to incorporate instruments that harness varying aspects of nature to form music; for example, a pendulum that reacts to the earth’s gravitational pull to create patterns that can be read musically. Her Biophilia showcase in Manchester, England, introduced the audience to numerous other instruments that cast intrigue throughout the venue; one was a “synthesizer” that “plays” lightning… I am also yet to understand this fully myself. It resembles a huge Electrostatic Generator but the metal domes seem to be replaced by glass and rather than sitting next to each other, one is suspended above enhancing the sense of lightning striking down.
The aspect of nature is further woven into the technological aspects of Biophila and the apps that accompany it through the growth that the apps will undertake as more is unveiled during the release of the full record. This concept is worth losing yourself in and I urge all of those who own an iPad to explore this project in further detail and take advantage of the apps.
Her video for single ‘Crystalline’ has reunited her with forward thinking French director, Michel Gondry, who she worked with on other videos including Human Behaviour, Declare Independance, Hyperballad amongst others, and features the directors usual take on film and music and creates striking visuals that link directly to the themes contained within the project. In an age where electronic music is the norm and digital creativity is constantly pushing the boundaries of fan interaction it is fresh to know that there are still artists who are able to go one further and look back at what was to look forward. It has pushed the boundaries of music and interaction and sets her ahead of the competition once again. Now we just have to wait and watch the world of Biophilia evolve. Amazing.
