Actress, Zooey Deschanel (She) and producer, Matt Ward (Him), together make up the indie-folk band, She & Him. With the success of their first album, Volume 1, She & Him return with their sophomore effort, rightfully named Volume 2. Swide explores whether this duo will be twice as charming, the second time around.
The quirky duo, She & Him, return to the world of music with the winning combination that brought them success in the first place: Zooey Deschanel’s endearing lyrics and the clever production of Matt Ward. Their newest album, "Volume 2", will consist of 13 song set which will include 11 originals and 2 covers, NRBQ ‘s “Ridin’ in my car” and Skeeter Davis’ “Gonna get along with you”. She & Him may not generate high record sales, but they do have a strong fan base who appreciate unpretentious, feel-good folk music.
Producer, Matt Ward shares that Zooey, “has lots of characters and songs that go back and forth quickly between these darker and lighter shades. That’s half of the process in production: making sure that nothing gets too sunny or washed out or that nothing gets too dark or lopsided. Some of the best older songs had very major chord progressions and really sad lyrics. Somehow it all evens out, creating this perfect picture of life. Because life is not always sunny, it’s not always dark—it’s somewhere in between.” From listening to both tracks, “In the Sun” and “Thieves”, one can see that equilibrium that the band is trying to achieve.
