Madrid: María Blanchard

The exhibition dedicated to María Blanchard (Santander, 1881 – Paris, 1932) seeks to recover this Spanish artist who experienced painting with all of its uncertainties and convictions and who would end up becoming one of the great figures of the avant-garde. 

Her artistic development came late and she did not reach creative maturity until well into her thirties, after moving to Paris. For many years, until the 1960s with the arrival of the book by Rodríguez Alcalde, she was the object of a biased vision that reduced the study of her pictorial work to a few clichés and focused primarily on finding a biographical justification for her style.

London: William Klein and Daido Moriyama

Explore modern urban life in New York and Tokyo through the work of photographs of William Klein and Daido Moriyama. This is the first exhibition to look at the relationship between the work of influential photographer and filmmaker Klein, and that of Moriyama, the most celebrated photographer to emerge from the Japanese Provoke movement of the 1960s.

On the Silk Road. Ancient Pathways Between East and West

Over two thousand years ago merchants, pilgrims and soldiers braved central Asia to trade in luxury goods, to encounter and dominate distant peoples, leading to the gradual creation of a network of routes grouped together under the name of the "Silk Road". The exhibition retraces the long journey between east and west from the 7th to the 14th centuries ADby reconstructing four iconic cities: Chang'an, today's Xi'an, the cosmopolitan capital of the Chinese Tang Dynasty; Turfan, an oasis city in the Gobi Desert; Samarkand, a major centre of trade and culture; and Baghdad, capital of the Muslim world and seat of the Caliphate. A special section explores the relationship between Italian cities like Venice and Genoa and the Far East.

New York: Faking It. Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop

The first major exhibition devoted to the history of doctored photographs, from hand-painted daguerreotypes and altered salt prints of the 1840s to the pre-digital dreamscapes of the late twentieth century, long before Photoshop was available. Featuring some two hundred photographs created in the service of art, politics, news, entertainment, and commerce, this exhibition will significantly revise our understanding of photographic history as it traces the medium's complex and changing relationship to visual truth.

Paris: Edward Hopper

October 10 – January 28 2013

The exhibition at the Grand Palais wants to shed light on Hopper’s oeuvre complexity. It is divided chronologically into two main parts: the first section covers Hopper’s formative years (1900-1924), comparing his work with that of his contemporaries and art he saw in Paris, which may have influenced him. The second section looks at the art of his mature years, from the first paintings emblematic of his personal style - House by the Railroad - (1924), to his last works (Two Comedians -1966).
