The work of the legendary twentieth-century landscape photographer Ansel Adams will be reminding those in London why he is one of the photographic greats with a new retrospective.
9 November - 28 April 2013
Royal Museums Greenwich, London
Ansel Easont Adams was born in San Francisco to a respected upper class family and his childhood years were spent exploring the nature that surrounded his 2nd home of Seacliffe. It wasn’t until 1927 that he produced his first portfolio and, from then on, things were never quite the same again. His fascination for the Yosemite Valley never wavered throughout his 60-year career, even creating a book for children about the Valley and what there was to discover there. He went on to become one of the founders of the magazine Aperture and was proud to present his first major retrospective exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1974.

Under the title ‘Photography from the Mountains to the Sea’ the Royal Museums Greenwich will present a collection of the photographer’s work, which captures the fascination he had with water and the American Wilderness, including images that have not been exhibited this side of the world before. It is rare that the world sees photography that is as classically evocative and dramatic as that of Adams’. Water was a constant in his work, one that some people wouldn’t recognise him for, and here we are able to see how the dynamics of water presented Adams with both inspiration and also the opportunity to experiment.

The retrospective is made up of over 100 original prints, including three of his photographic murals that tower towards three meters in height and are considered ground-breaking in his time.
This is an exhibition for both lovers of photography and lovers of the photographer, himself, presenting him from a new angle and giving us an insight into his work that we’ve not yet had before.
