Anna Orso left too soon

The beautiful Italian actress died suddenly on August 14th. Swide traces the steps of her glorious career as a tribute to her work that left a mark in the history of cinema.

She had nostalgic blue eyes and long hair, and she was one of the most beautiful Italian actresses: still at her age, 74, it was impossible not to find her incredibly charming. Born in Naples in 1938, Anna Orso’s career spanned 50 years, until up until August 14th when she suddenly died due to a very sudden illness.

Her debut was in 1962 in the “La Bibbia” movie by John Huston and she never stopped working with world renowned directors such as Bellocchio, Troisi, Squitieri, Bevilacqua, Veronesi, Wenders. Then, Hollywood: she was one of the Angels in “Angels in America” (2003) one of the most successful American series of all time, with actors like Al Pacino e Meryl Streep, but also with Wes Anderson, Steve Zissou (2004), Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe e Michael Gambon. Lately she was working on an American movie, 'Madame Butterfly the little girl from Nagasakì" by Michel Comte.

Her last finished work was "Italiana,  the video for the Dolce&Gabbana Matt Silk Eyewear Collection campaign by Luca Finotti that staged an Italian comedy-like short film starring a mother (Anna Orso) and a daughter (Bianca Balti) driving while contending for each other’s pair of sunglasses.

On September 14th, one month after her death, there will be a commemorating ceremony in Trastevere, Rome, at the Cinema Bookstore that is situated in front of her house and was one of her favourite spots. For whoever wants to pay tribute to her beauty and talent, the appointment is at 7 PM at Libreria del Cinema (Via dei Fienaroli 31, Tel.0039-065817724).
