You think you know someone and can figure them out as easy as a Lego puzzle and then they go out and get all Hollywood in a Seth Rogen-driven superhero production. Meet the many personas of the highly-talented Mr Gondry.
A PROUD FATHER
... to Paul Gondry, comic book whizzkid and co-director of animated film Megalomania.
"We're [doing] a cartoon, an animated film that I co-directed with my son, called 'Megalomania,' and it's being produced by Curious Pictures in New York. Dan Clowes wrote the screenplay and we have Steve Buscemi doing the voice of the main character [ It was later revealed that Seth Rogen and Juliette Lewis would also be involved in the voiceover]. I guess I will do that more efficiently after "The Green Hornet" but they already started to work on it.
It's about three kids who discover how to create energy from hair. And they shave everyone on the planet. The rich people wear and rule the world. So the rich people wear wigs and the poor people are just bald. And they want to make a better world, but the maker -- which is sort of based on my son -- is a horrible dictator."
A proud parent indeed as he discusses his son's intriguing aesthetics; curious and curiouser.
"He is always late with his homework, but he would set an alarm clock at 5 a.m. to spend three hours finishing his art project before he goes to school. Everything he has ever done has been character-based -- always looser, absurd, rejected and funny. Rabbits, shoes, craps, old ladies, flies -- all creatures have been scrutinized in his twisted eye to reveal their differences."
Megalomania is another one of Michel's project we shall have to patiently wait for but do enjoy an insight into Paul's inherited sense of bizarre in his 2005 music video for The Willowz.
A MUSIC VIDEO GURU
... a trademark of his.
There were the White Stripes, Bjork and numerous others. The latest to have jumped on the twisted French bandwagon is Mia Doi Todd - while the music may not be everyone's cup of tea (possibly a little Bossa Nova for the modern cynics ), the concept is both so simple and so brilliant. And remarkably uncomplicated a Gondry brainchild.
A MAN OF FEW WORDS
... and even fewer emotions. All elusiveness and French accent as recently demonstrated in the MTV interviewed during which he revealed yet another new project involving Juno's Ellen Page and young screenwriting talent Keith Bunin.
Word on the street is he shall also be collaborating with Bjork on yet another project - something scientific and 3-D, and a musical. Saying it could literally be anything is an understatement.
A MAINSTREAM VISIONNAIRE
aka A CONTRADICTION IN TERMS
Upcoming film The Green Hornet has all the ingredients: a superhero, a sexpot (Cameron Diaz). Seth Rogen, a budget... and those all-important fight scenes.
