Candy Darling, Andy Warhol Superstar, is the subject of a new documentary film and tribute to an extraordinary life. The film has just been screened as work in progress in Las Vegas. We take a peek.
The film, "Beautiful Darling" pays tribute to the short but influential life of an extraordinary person -- the actress Candy Darling, born James Slattery in a Long Island suburb in 1944.
Warhol superstar, actress of both stage and screen, and immortalized in the songs of Lou Reed and the Rolling Stones, she was drawn to the feminine from childhood, by the mid-Sixties James had become Candy, a gorgeous, blonde actress and well-known downtown New York figure.
Candy's career took her from the outskirts of the Broadway theatre scene and into Andy Warhol's legendary Factory.
She starred in the Warhol film - Flesh and Women in Revolt, and went on to land a role in Tennessee Williams' play Small Craft Warnings.
Although she dreamed of becoming a Hollywood star, she tragically died of lymphoma in the early Seventies, at only twenty-nine.
It goes without saying her story is a wild, creative one full of complex characters. One of her more famous quotes is that of "whatever the obstacles, be true to yourself" which gives the film, directed by James Rasin (Burning Gnat) its powerful, yet emotional foundation.
Reviews following its first screening have been good - LasVegasWeekly.com described the work in progress as "...impressively assembled. Darling is gritty and original and, like its subject, has an aura."
The film will use both current and vintage interviews, excerpts from Candy's own diaries and letters, as well as vintage footage of Candy and friends.
