Rankin uses style to save sight
There’s nothing better than feeling you can put the world to rights and who knew it could cost the same as a tube of mascara. Rankin’s latest campaign for charity Sightsavers amins to raise the plight of the millions of women around the world that have gone blind.
Rankin is perhaps better known for his work as a fashion photographer – his iconic shot of Kylie lying naked and prostrate, to the Queen smiling enigmatically, have gained him a reputation as one of the world’s leading photographers.
Although strongly connected to style Rankin has never shied from portraying difficult subject matters, addressing issues from domestic violence to body image in both his personal work as well as charity and commercial projects. He has charity campaigns for Amnesty International, Everyman, Special Olympics, Oxfam, Teenage Cancer Trust, Refuge, The Teaching Awards, Women’s Aid, Women’s Vote, Breast Cancer Awareness and Youth Music.
Rankin worked with make-up artist Michelle Campbell who has worked with artists like Bjork, Oasis, Alison Goldfrapp, Bono, Elle MacPherson, and Emma Watson.
“My design tells the story of what can happen when someone suffers an extreme case of trachoma. I used real flies instead of fake which was Rankin’s suggestion and I think it really works! The variations of green you get from real flies inspired my colour pallet for the make-up.” – Michelle Campbell
“I can’t imagine what it must be like to be blind and I can’t even begin to comprehend the distress it causes. What is most upsetting is that so much is treatable, and people suffer unnecessarily. With so many women affected by blindness, the work of Sightsavers is of vital importance. They are reaching people who often have no access to help, and taking the inequality out of treatment.” - Rankin
