‘Il cielo in
una stanza’…

Dolce and Gabbana The One commercial song Mina Il cielo in una stanza

Mina’s memorable 1960s song, Il Cielo in Una Stanza is the third protagonist of the Dolce&Gabbana The One television campaign shot by Martin Scorsese. Listen to the song translated into English, read the poetic lyrics and the incredible story behind the song.

Mina’s incredible performance of the Il Cielo in Una stanza is the third protagonist of the Dolce&Gabbana The One television campaign shot by Martin Scorsese. The song was also translated into English for a Mina best hits, in various languages including Spanish and Japanese. The Italian version made it to number 90 in the Billboard One Hundred in the USA in 1961. There is however a more interesting story behind the song than just its international success and Mina’s beautiful voice.

The song was composed by Gino Paoli, Italian singer and songwriter. The song is a reflection of the changing attitudes of the 1960s all over the Western World and Italy in particular. The song describes the atmosphere in a room following an encounter between a man and a woman, when the air is full of “magic”, which relates to the intimacy, the abandon, but not necessarily the love. Gino Paoli in fact relates that the woman to inspire this song was not his muse, not a lover nor his wife, but a common prostitute he never saw again.

Il Cielo in una Stanza is much more overtly sexual than the poem it is inspired by, with similar imager: infinity. Giacomo Leopardi’s Infinito recounts a similar experience, but in a much more intellectual and solitary manner. Though the true literary inspiration for Gino Paoli are the French existentialist philosophers and writers like Jean Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus who also had their own singing interpreters, Edith Piaf, Jacques Prevert, Juliette Grecò, Boris Vian, Charles Aznavour, Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel. Gino Paoli’s was Mina.

Mina’s performance in the recording studio was apparently so moving that the orchestra recording with her gave her a standing ovation, and many ere moved to tears. The song is a perfect score for the Dolce&Gabbana The One campaign, where Scarlett Johansson and Matthew McConaughey play on similar emotions, and relay an equally memorable feeling.

Il cielo in una stanza (written by Gino Paoli)

Quando sei qui con me

questa stanza non ha più pareti

ma alberi,

alberi infiniti

quando sei qui vicino a me

questo soffitto viola

no, non esiste più.

Io vedo il cielo sopra noi

che restiamo qui

abbandonati

come se non ci fosse più

niente, più niente al mondo.

Suona un’armonica

mi sembra un organo

che vibra per te e per me

su nell’immensità del cielo.

Per te, per me:

nel cielo.

When you are here with me

this room has no walls

but trees,

infinite trees

when you are near to me

this violet ceiling

doesn’t exist anymore.

I see the sky above us

and we rest here

abandoned

As if there is nothing else

Nothing else in the world.

An harmonica is playing

and it seems to me like an organ

vibrating for you and for me

up in the immensity of the sky.

For you, for me:

in the sky.
