Swide presents a comprehensive recap of the most superhero film releases of 2014 and beyond. From sequels like The Amazing Spider-Man and X-Men, to reboots like The Fantastic Four and once in a lifetime events like Batman vs Superman.
A guide to
releases in 2014
It was the year 2000 when Twentieth Century Fox approached Bryan Singer, a 35 year old director mostly known for a cult movie, The Usual Suspects and a controversial flick about a young boy’s fascination for a Nazi criminal (Apt Pupil), to direct the movie inspired by Marvel comic X-Men. Singer initially refused, considering comics basically crap. He refused twice before reading the Stan Lee and Jack Kirby comic, than he accepted creating what we can consider the first of the many new superhero movies of a new golden age.
Since that movie both Marvel and DC inspired characters have had their moments on the big screen, with alternate fortune and box office success, and a lot of big Hollywood names (Sam Raimi on top) have directed amazing trilogies and given new faces and a brand new life to what was previously considered only a geeky passion.
This year has seen some sequel predictably hitting the big (Iron Man 3) and some reboot creating whole new stories to well known and much loved previous cinematic versions (Man of Steel). But what about the upcoming superheroes movies for 2014?
Whether inspired by classic comic books or new graphic novels, let’s take a look at which new supehero films will see the light next year (and beyond) coming from the shelves of a comic book store.
I, Frankenstein – Release date January 24, 2014
Directed by Stuart Beattie, The Pirates of the Carribean’s writer, I, Frankenstein will open the year of comics movie with a brand new adaptation of a graphic novel. Co-written by Kevin Grevioux, co-writer of Underworld (he was also an actor in the Romeo and Juliet of the vampires/werewolves movies) and creator of the graphic novel of the same name, I, Frankenstein tells the story of Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s creature Adam who still walks the Earth 200 years from his birth. Aaron Eckart, who was previously Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, stars as Adam The Creature and Dexter’s last love interest Yvonne Strahovski stars as Terra. In the movie also Bill Nighy (Naberius, leader of demons) and Miranda Otto (Leonore, queen of the gargoyles).
RoboCop – Release date February 12, 2014
Well, this is not a real adaptation, but when the original Paul Veroheven RoboCop became such a huge success, Marvel released a comic book series based on Detroit police officer turned cyborg Alex Murphy. Followed by a lot of the original movies’ fan’s controversies, Brazilian José Padilha is directing the new version which stars one of my favourite TV characters The Killing’s detective Stephen Holder aka Joel Kinnaman.
Gary Oldman (Hi Commissioner Gordon!) is starring as RoboCop creator Dr. Dennett Norton, Michael Keaton (Hi Tim Burton’s Batman!) is starring as the villain Raymond Sellars and Abbie Cornish (Hi Sucker Punch’s random chick!) as Alex’s wife. We’ll see. Dead or alive. By the way, Netflix is resuscitating The Killing for a 3 season!
Captain America The Winter Soldier – Release date April 4, 2014
A new chapter for Chris Evans’ Cap: this time Steve Rogers will team up with Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow to battle a new villain, the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier aka Cap’s previously best friend Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) turned into a killer by brainwashing. (SPOILER!!!)
It’s fresh news that the movie is going into some reshoots and some websites are speculating on the reasons behind this decision: is maybe because of Chris Evans leaving the Captain America saga? Everybody who has read the comics knows that Captain America dies and Bucky Barnes replaces him: does this mean that after The Avengers 2 in 2015 there will be a new Captain? In the meanwhile, enjoy the trailer with our beloved Chris.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – Release date May 2, 2014
After the huge success of the reboot of Spiderman after the cancellation of Sam Raimi’s and Tobey McGuire’s Spiderman 4, this new Marc Webb’s chapter sees new actors joining Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Sally Field: Dane DeHaan and Chris Cooper are Norman Osborn and his father Harry (the first Green Goblin), Jamie Foxx as the new villain Electro and Paul Giamatti as The Rhino. We also meet in the new trailer Campbell Scott which plays Peter’s father Richard Parker. For all the Spidey fans we’re already anticipating an Amazing Spiderman 3 and 4: release dates are set yet on June 10, 2016, and May 4, 2018.
X-Men: Days of Future Past – Release date May 24, 2014
Seventh instalment of the X-Men saga, Days of the future past sees the return of Bryan Singer as director after the first X-Men (2000) and X2 (2003). Because of the movie being a sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and X-Men: First Class (2011) and The Wolverine (2013), some names from the past are coming back to join a battle set in their past to save their future: so the cast features both the embodiments of some characters so Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy are Charles Xavier/Professor X and Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender are Magneto. Hugh Jackman is returning as the Wolverine, Anna Paquin will be Rogue and Halle Berry Storm.
The cast is truly impressive adding also Ellen Page (Shadowcat), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Peter Dinklage (Bolivar Trask) and – last but not least, actually first in the lineup according to IMDb STARmeter, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven/Mystique. If there is a must see superheroes movie in 2014, well, we have no doubt its this one.
Guardians of the Galaxy – Release date August 1, 2014
No trailer yet Finally a trailer for this brand new Marvel adaption of the comic of the same name! This august we’re getting to know for the first time Star-Lord, a jet pilot who travels space to form an alien team to defeat a cosmic menace. Chris Pratt is Star-Lord and describes his character with these words: “He had a hard time as a kid, and now he goes around space, making out with hot alien girls and just being a rogue and a bit of a jerk, and through teaming up with these guys, finds a higher purpose for himself”. In the cast also Lee Pace as the super villain Ronan The Accuser, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Karen Gillian as Nebula, Djimon Hounsoy as Korath, Glenn Close as Nova Prime and Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as the voices of Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Guardians will be distributed by Disney.
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For – August 22, 2014
Finally the 2005 Sin City sequel will see the light! Or the dark, whatever. Co-Directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, author of the graphic novel, the most similar movie to the aesthetics of the original comic will be finally released this upcoming summer. This second movie is based on the second book in the Sin City series by Miller and, like the first one, divided in episodes: one of the plots is based on the story “Just Another Saturday Night” from the fifth book, Booze, Broads & Bullets.
There will be also two original stories written by Frank Miller exclusively for the film and one is following Nancy (Jessica Alba) after John Hartigan’s suicide (Bruce Willis) at the end of “That Yellow bastard”.
A lot of other characters from the first movie are coming back like Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Powers Boothe, Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen. But of course we’re very excited to see what how some new cast members will shine in the Rodriguez/Miller black and white: Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Juno Temple, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven (as a substitute for Michael Madsen’s role of Bob) and clearly Lady Gaga in a cameo as The Woman.
The Avengers 2 Age of Ultron – Released date May 1, 2015
While many are speculating if we’ll never see a crossover between The Amazing Spiderman 2 and the second flick of The Avengers, it’s fresh news that director Joss Whedon has just finished the script for the new chapter of the much loved superheroes squad.
Robert Downey jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo are coming back as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye and The Hulk: in their battle against the villain Ulton (James Spader) two new superheroes are joining The Avengers, the siblings Wanda and Pietro Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch with her telekinetic and spell abilities and Quincksilver with his superhuman speed. We can’t hide how happy we are for two of the best new young Hollywood faces joining the cast: Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
The Fantastic Four – Release date June 19, 2015
We didn’t love the previous version so we’re quite excited about this reboot directed by class 1985 Chronicle director Josh Trank. No news about the plot but someone is speculating a possible shared universe with X-Men.
According to IMDb the only actor rumoured is our favourite Michael B. Jordan which will replace Chris Evans as Johnny Storm/Human Torch. Also Josh Trank is rumoured to be director of a possible The Amazing Spider-Man spin off titled Venom featuring Flash and Carnage.
Ant-Man – Release date July 31, 2015
Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs The World director Edgar Wright is in charge to direct Ant-Man: the story of the biochemist Dr. Hank Pym which discovers a size-altering formula and develops an instrument that helps him communicate with and control insects. Rumours of Ant-Man possibly replacing Iron Man in The Avengers Age of Ultron seem frankly pure fiction. Actor Paul Rudd has recently denied his presence in the movie so, let’s begin with casting speculation!
Batman vs Superman – Release date
August 26, 2015 May 6, 2016
When Man of Steel’s director Zack Snyder confirmed at San Diego Comicon 2013 that the sequel would have had the same cast (Henri Cavill, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane) and featured both Superman and Batman in the same movie the internet literally exploded. When a moth later, in august, it was announced that Ben Affleck would have been Batman the world collapsed. In the last few days Israeli beauty Gal Gadot has been added to the cast as Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa of Game of Thrones fame is rumoured to be in the movie too. Now we can sit and patiently wait for the universe imploding till august 2015.
Other random superheroes movies in development: Justice League (maybe after the Batman/Superman); The Flash possibly being released in 2016; and Wonder Woman after Justice League release. Whoa that’s a lot of super hero movies for you to get your teeth stuck into.

The new Wes Anderson’s movie has just been released: Swide puts together the clues about the locations (or possible locations) involved. Did you know that to shoot the hotel from afar a handmade miniature model was used?
The Back to the Future hover board is (unfortunately) is not real, it was all a Funny or Die’s giant hoax. Inspired by them we are penning this wish list of totally useful (and exclusively for girls) gadgets and inventions from movies we wish they were real.
